Lonely in London
I'm couchsurfing in Camden with a beautiful couple who call each other love. They're enough to make me swallow my bluff and believe. So is this city. After Johannesburg, and all that in between, when I swore I was done for, their love is welcoming. I've had to give up the soft, fantasy slide into sleep. I haven't much since Noel left me, but we shadow danced, and I made peace with history. It's difficult to imagine what's next. It's downright scary. I've an idea for a new story, but some days the world seems to turn too slowly, the old vanguard crowds the way forward, the wretched block the path back, but we build our bridges with clay, and I'm not particularly worried. The smile, the eyelashes don't recognize their reflection. The loved life lives unaware and the prophet doesn't wait for resurrection. Even as young flames, barely lit and burning, brought flickering into a world obscured by smoke from matchless conflagration, we knew our place would be to bring fresh light, warmth, and reclaim the hearth for our inferno of change. Today may be cold, tomorrow boiling, but this time next year is for us to determine. | | Friday, October 6th, 2006 | | 2:51 pm |
Under pressure from visiting representatives of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Nuri Kamal al-Maliki announced a four-point plan to end sectarian violence: i) Formation of local security committees. ii) Formation of central committee for peace and security. iii) Oversight of the media. iv) Monthly reviews of the plan. Media oversight is another way of saying censorship. Why isn’t anyone talking about this? | | Friday, September 29th, 2006 | | 11:38 am |

It should come as no surprise that Amnesty International has published findings indicating that Israel deliberately destroyed civilian infrastructure in Lebanon, activity which included war crimes. This report comes following Israel’s clear violation of ceasefire, and its roundup of the usual suspects, including parliamentary secretary-general Mahmoud al-Ramahi and deputy prime minister Nasser al-Shaer, in the West Bank. It's not everyday I feel like updating, but it seems people are wondering where I am. The southern suburbs, Cape Town. I'm in the library at the University; you know, those red tile roofs, the stairs and ivy; that veritable fortress on the hill, citadel for higher learning. It's overcast and the wind is whipping in with regularity. Winter semester is well underway. I got good grades last semester and went traveling. Mozambique-Malawi-Zambia-Zimbabwe. By bus and minibus, in the back of trucks, by plane, often in a rush, or slow. There's so much contiguous land to see, but I.. But I want to go to Madagascar, if only it was easy, 'And you know, I'll pay for gas if you take me, your dhow will make it through the channel, those potato sack sails are sure, we'll withstand what will, that island had to populate somehow, leave it to me.' Traveling was amazing! My memories are vivid, I can almost see them reflected in the wind screen. I did what I could in five weeks and had fun, felt safe and well. From Maputo to Lake Malawi, beside Kafue, Mosi-oa-Tunya, and Harare. I'll return to Zimbabwe as soon as the school schedule provides me with a window, I'll jump, but won't speak openly against the king, and will bring plenty of foreign currency. But, I've been back, and all these unaswered e-mail's will be dealt with, presently! So, a ceasefire, but pull troops out, surrender arms. I don't care if your a US backed Somali warlord, an army official stationed in Seoul, or the whole troupe of fundamentalist settlers on Palestinian soil. Lay down your arms for love of the world; Whether the state is your enemy, or you're sick of greed, maybe you're being targeted for your name, face and dress, or what you read. We're way outside. We've forgotten what is. So caught up in image, pulling in every direction, we're headed for calamity, emergency! ( I'll post more pictures after class, you'll see. )It makes sense to update more. | | Friday, June 16th, 2006 | | 2:39 pm |

just to say hello Yesterday I wore tie-dye to school. I only wear tie-dye when all my other shirts are dirty, I’m pressed for time, or feeling lazy. It was cold and windy as I walked the hill to campus and raining lightly when I walked down. On my way through town I stopped at the market and bought chocolate. We had two students from the workshops over for lunch. They ate ham sandwiches and I had cheese with lettuce. For dessert we ate the chocolate, which everyone agreed was the best part. After lunch I fell asleep reading on the couch and woke up late in the afternoon. The rain had stopped and the sky looked clear so I decided to go for a walk; I like to walk around the neighborhoods and admire the houses. I started off toward the train station and walked south beside the tracks in the direction of Newlands. It began to rain as I walked by a colorful cluster of Cape-Dutch houses, and caught without my slicker, I decided to seek refuge under an oak tree. Standing under the moss-grown branches, warming my hands, enjoying the rain plashing in puddles on the street, I realized I wasn’t alone under the old tree. A lovely little girl with long blonde hair was standing next to the thick trunk staring at me. As I looked at her she smiled sweetly. “Where are your shoes?” I inquired. She smiled again and disappeared behind the tree, returning with a pair of worn brown sandals. “Why aren’t you wearing them?” She dropped the sandals at her sides, scampered into the rain, and jumped with both feet into a wide puddle. She splashed again, thoroughly soaking her light blue dress, turned, and ran grinning to where I was standing. She held her arms out wide as if to say, “See!” I smiled with delight and she looked very pleased but her expression changed abruptly. She cocked her head, listening, and then darted away, without any valediction, abandoning her sandals. ( ***** ) | | Wednesday, April 19th, 2006 | | 10:42 am |
